Widgeon Web Design's Website Development Projects

A sample of our recent work.

Dermatology Olympia

Project objectives: Professional website for local dermatology practitioner. Project included the development of a new logo.

Methodology: Logo creation entailed the development of two alternate concepts, followed by selecting the best concept and revisions of that concept to develop the final product. The website layout is rendered in the very latest HTML5 with CSS3. Conditional declarations in the layout code provide retroactive support for older browsers, and future compatibility for the emerging next generation of web browsing devices. Web page design uses a flexible width to support a variety of screen sizes. The design was ported to a Content Management System (CMS) for ease of administration.

The result: The use of a very large stock photo on the homepage provides a visually striking effect. The logo conveys the brand personality with an almost-retro yet exuberant appeal. The contact form allows online communications to be sent directly from the website to the website owner. Preliminary SEO results appear promising.

Soloy Helicopters

Project objectives:New website for contract helicopter operators in Alaska. Client wanted an internet-based touchpoint for prospective customers.

The result: The new website features an attractive header bar, with gradient shading reminiscent of shiny steel. The homepage layout emphasizes a photographic image of a helicopter that has landed in a remote valley in Alaska, with rocky terrain emphasizing the difficult conditions under which the Soloy Helicopters pilots operate. The company had an existing logo that had been previously created by another firm; but Widgeon Web Design modified the image, adding colors specified by the client to stand out from the grey background of the headerbar. The website includes an online contact form so prospects can contact the company directly from the website. The text content that will be featured on the individual content pages of this project is still under development.

Patrick Meyers Woodcraft

Project objectives:New website for local cabinet maker / master craftsman. Visual and conceptual redesign of existing website. New photo gallery. Improved SEO targeting primary keywords in local Google search results.

The result: The new website design emphasizes photos of the many projects that have been completed by Patrick Meyers Woodcraft. The design is largely based on earth tones and includes a "wood grain" background to subtly highlight the company's professional focus. The new website has a creative homepage design which showcases the most important aspects of the woodcraft business in a search engine-friendly manner: it includes thumbnail images that link to gallery categories, as well as a 4-photo JavaScript-based rotating photo display. The photo gallery includes titles for categories and subcategories, with a dropdown menu for quick access to photos of a specific project from any page on the site, and a JavaScript slideshow that displays all the full-size photos in a given category. Revised text content includes important keywords while describing the business in a personable, friendly manner. The website implements Google Analytics for simple and effective traffic statistics analysis.

The client also had matching business cards designed and printed, which are thematically congruous with the new website and attractive to look at.

Forest Grove Soap

Project objectives: Handcrafted soapmaker wished to expand audience for existing website. New features and services included:

  • New layout design
  • Shopping cart system for online sales
  • Real-time shipping calculator
  • Simple interface for product management

The result: The new visual design was developed to suit the client's taste and existing logo. It employs a "torn paper" look for the headerbar and footerbar; rounded corners at the bottom of the container element; and a drop shadow around the container element. The navigation employs a dropdown menu for easy access to specific item pages. Each item has its own page, and categories have a listing of all items within the category. Each item has an "add to cart" button, and each page includes a "view cart" button. The shopping cart page allows the customer to change the quantity of the products in the cart, and provides the option to remove items from the shopping cart. The system calculates shipment weight based on product details stored in the database. Customers log in to provide their shipping address, which is used to provide a real-time shipping cost from the USPS. Payment processing is handled by PayPal. The website owner has a convenient interface for easy management of page content, product descriptions, product photo images, and product details (price, shipping weight, etc). They make great soap, too, we highly recommend it, give them a try!

Integrative Heart Focus

Project overview: This website for Integrative Heart Focus was developed by Widgeon Web Design. The client selected the color palette and presented a rough draft of several ideas. Widgeon Web Design developed this into a fully rendered website and graphical navigation bar. Additionally, Widgeon implemented a similar graphic design on the client's business cards.

Project Goals:

  • Saying more with less. One objective of the site from a design standpoint was to communicate as much as possible with a few words, relying on stock photos to convey key concepts and minimalist text to avoid overwhelming the visitor.
  • Custom navigation
  • Integrate a Content Management System so the customer can make their own website content updates in the future
  • Direct approved patient web traffic to an affiliated retail site

Methodology: Widgeon Web Design's professional staff worked closely with the client to complete the project before the deadline. Widgeon created layout proposals for the site and elements (header bar, logo, and logotype), then fine-tuned these through several rounds of revision. Selected stock photos as appropriate. Once the design layout was approved, it was converted into a theme (or "skin") for a content management system.

The result: Integrative Heart Focus has an attractive new website and has begun seeing patients at their clinic in Lacey, Washington. The company has begun a flyer campaign to promote its services and its new website!

Central Garden Share

Project objectives: Client wanted to build a community site that would allow users to post notices about garden exchanges, events, garden parties and work parties in Seattle's Central District. Client requested a specific homepage layout design concept.

Methodology: Rich use of stock photos with vibrant colors. Standards-compliant homepage design uses graphical navigation with CSS rollovers. Installed open-source PHPBulletinBoard community discussion board software and customized a theme to blend in and match the rest of the website.

The result: An attractive, garden-themed website is now online! Unfortunately the organization that commissioned the website has now more or less abandoned the project, but the website system is fully functional - go ahead and post about your garden!

Health Connections PLLC

screenshot of the Health Connections PLLC website design

Project objectives: Professional website for local health care provider. This project was working on a constrained budget, so a minimalist design was essential.

Methodology: Rollover background images on tabbed navigation utilize the classic CSS "sliding door" technique for flexibile width tabs. Right hand sidebar navigation links provide access to additional content. Page layout is a flexible width "liquid layout" to fill a screen of any size. Otherwise the layout design is quite basic, and does not include unique graphics for the individual pages.

The result: This website is live and actively engaged in recruiting new patients for the client's practice. The design has been ported to a Content Management System for simple content administration by the website owner. The two most important features of the new website are:

  • The "Forms" page with its consent forms, HIPAA statement, and patient intake forms. Having all this information available from the website allows patients to fill out their forms at home prior to their initial visit. This saves time in the office and allows visits to be more productive and patient-focused.
  • The "Contact" page provides directions to the clinic, as well as an online contact form. Patients can use the online form to contact their health care provider when requesting information or appointment scheduling.

Basementia Design™

Project objectives: Widgeon Web Design is a division of Basement Productions, Inc. Basementia Design™ is Widgeon's older sibling.

Methodology: The website for Basementia Design™ as well as all the websites created by Basementia Design and all the website templates sold by Basementia Design were created by the staff who now runs Widgeon Web Design.

The result: Basementia™ has been creating websites since 2003, and has been hosting websites continuously since 2005. We have built a number of creative websites with interactive features, including instant online price quotes, shopping cart functionality, and custom programming for database systems. Admittedly, some of the websites in Basementia Design's portfolio are beginning to show their age. That's why Widgeon Web Design has taken the helm and is now moving on to a bigger, brighter future.
